I think you may not enjoy Matt’s unless you suffer from what I call the “Bad Taste”. The “Bad Taste” causes you to crave such food as Wendy’s double stack with cheese, tuna mac, and Hot Pockets.

I fell in love with Dara’s writing when I wrote my own review of Ngon, then read this:

“Moreover, when I had the great, the gorgeous, the gallopingly, gargantuanly gratifying beef pho at the new Ngon Vietnamese Bistro in Frogtown, I wished to take a thousand bowls of it with me, fill a thousand Super Soaker water guns with it, and just rampage. Take that, lesser pho vendors–splat!”

Talk about an exuberant cascade. I know exactly what you mean.

I have to say I disagreen wholeheartedly about Matt’s Jucy Lucy burgers. You have a right to your opinion, but they are the best and only burgers I will even eat. I avoid such fare for the most part, but once in a while, when I want to indulge, Matt’s is my place. I was initiated years ago and became an addict. They always ask you if you have had one before so if not, you get the warning about the cheese being hot and to wait a bit. So that one’s probably your own fault. They are greasy and yummy. With a basket of fries. They’re probably one of the most unhealthy things you can eat, but you sometimes need to shock your system. I LOVE Matt’s. It’s fine if you would rather pay to eat at the Capitol Grille, you leave the table open for the rest of us. I’ll take Matt’s $4.75 burgers any day.

Have you been to the Bulldog N.E. yet? I think theirs is my fave on that list (though in truth, I prefer the Vincent fries).

I’ve been “testing” that list since it came out, with my teenage boys accompanying me. I haven’t made it to Capital Grille yet, but have found the burgers at Vincent and Black Forest to be wonderful. However–the Monte Carlo was awful. I’m surprised that one made it on her list, although maybe I caught them on a bad day.
