I recently went to First Avenue for the first time in about six years, too. (Cloud Cult was awesome, btw.) Both the lack of smoke and the Strongbow made me blissful. Fortunately, I had my earplugs with me, but they used to sell earplugs at the bar or coat check. Since that info is about 12 years old, your mileage may vary...

A measure of how lame I am:

I've lived in this fabulous city for 10 years... and have NEVER BEEN TO FIRST AVE.

Shame on me. I'll do my best to rectify that.

Joanna – Tell me about it sister. I very much wanted to flee the Ave that night, but I didn't want to leave my wheelchair-bound companion alone on the floor and we were packed in there too tight to get her out. Next time, ear plugs. Double ear plugs.

Alexis – That, my almost-as-old-as-me friend is indisputable, but equally, shouldn't age have made my ears less acute? Shouldn't I have been more sensitive to freakish volume in my 20s? Yeah, they've jacked up the volume. To the detriment of the music. Dude.

When I first moved to Mpls 20 years ago, First Ave was a discovery. No Target Center yet. There was a period when every African musician seemed to stop here on the way from one coast to the other, and they always had great dancers on stage. Getting sweaty and stinky down on the concrete dance floor, right up next to the stage, was bliss. I haven't been back since the smoking ban, so I may have to make a point to go there just to see what it's like now that I don't have to burn my clothes after a show.
Earplugs, man. For what it's worth, I had a similar experience at Northrup for a Caetano Veloso show. We actually had to leave it was so painful, and I love him. A little hearing loss the next day is the price of rock and roll, but sometimes your body just tells you "Flee! before you start bleeding from the ears!" and then you need to blame the sound man.
