Yes, I think the Produce Exchange is actually one of their anchor tenants, and I shop their all year. They are right in the middle of the building, and because they are such a successful business in their own right, this "produce stand" is a way to promote themselves, sell off their ripest stuff, and build community as part of this revitalization project. Check out their website to see what they have on special.

Erica - How is it that you know every thing happening in every corner of the city? It this a Twitter thing? You're like a life-support machine for Minneapolis, as soon as something changes, all sorts of lights start flashing on your forehead and you duly notify everyone. I need your connections sister.

The management change at MGM sounds promising. I see that condos in the Midtown Exchange area (the Phase II ones) are starting at under 150k. I could almost afford that.

I love the MGM with every fiber of my being. I seriously really do.

And I miss my apartment in Uptown from which I could take a 5 minute bike ride down the Greenway to the Midtown Exchange.

I particularly enjoy the huarachazo and horchata at Los Ocampo and anything I've ever had at La Sirena Gorda (except the ceviche, which I normally really like). I've never eaten at the Jakeeno's in the MGM, but I am a regular at their 36th/Chicago location, so I'd like to see them do well. They said the MGM asked them to move into a bigger stall.

The guy that used to manage the MOA just took over the MGM late last year. I take that as a good sign, though I'm not sure what changes have been made or are on the way.

Amanda - Yes, yes I did mean to switch from 'MBM' to 'MGM' throughout the piece. It's a little known literary style called "Posting Without Proofing" (PWP). I'm actually the only person I know that dabbles in PWP, so it hasn't enjoyed widespread popularity yet, but one can always hope. (Hope that others will catch their typos before too long... Thanks!)

This is pretty much the first thing I've ever read that's made me want to move to Minneapolis. But then I realized that wishing for something similar to open up near me may still be more appealing than moving to Minneapolis. At any rate, I'm still rather jealous.

Also: Did you mean to switch between MBM and MGM as an abbreviation for Midtown Global Market throughout this piece?

Joanna - Oh man, that sounds awesome! You know some people who've just returned from about four years in Europe tend to make wise cracks about the state of fruit and cheese in the supermarkets. I guess those people should find a way to get to MGM more often.

Stupid question: is the produce exchange a year round thing?

All my holiday shopping was essentially taken care of in Chile, but now I know where to go for quick, cool gifts the next time it comes up.

I end up there about twice a week to buy fruit at the Produce Exchange: THE very best quality, the very best (low) price, and ready to eat, ripe. They are a produce distributor for co-ops, so their organic produce is the stuff they need to unload because it's ready to eat. In the summer, you can get cherries, peaches, berries for dollars a pound less than elsewhere, and they all taste like real fruit.
Right next to them is the place that sells locally produced cheeses and meats. Pick up some sheep's cheese from Shepherds Way farm; who needs to go to Europe to get great cheese anymore?

Manny's Tortas' torta cubana is my standby for lunch. I know I should try something different, but I have to have it. Mapps coffee shop for chai, free Wi-Fi, and there's often some kind of music or dance lesson going on.

I think that all the folks that work in Allina do a lot of lunch business, and that the restaurants and markets are doing OK. I'm not sure if all the other merchants get enough traffic but I hope so.
