way to go! in the 10 years i've lived in st. paul i've lived without a car. i have two children, 12 bikes, and 3 trailers, and am a constant user of our amazing transit system. it can be done, you just have to shift your thinking away from the automobile as your first option. i still rely on vehicles in more ways than i like to comtemplate, but once you start thinking car-free, its amazing what you can do without one.

Hey Joanna,

Yeah, car-free 20 years ago must've been hell, Uptown or no. Though I can see the beauty of the Uptown lifestyle, I sure do love me the LRT.

I lived car-free for the first two years I lived in Minneapolis (almost twenty years ago and before light rail). It worked because I lived a five minute walk from work, but there were no decent groceries in walking distance. Hell, there were no decent cafes with one or two exceptions. That has changed. But I like Uptown for the same reasons you like downtown: walking distance to just about everything I want or need (the Lagoon!), and easy bus access to the rest. No skyways, though! And I'm still waiting for that streetcar on Lake St. Might be along wait.
